Introduced in January 2016, the Vox AC30CH incorporated |
the chassis from an Vox AC30C2 combo amp into a head cabinet.
Controls
The AC30CH had a Normal and a Top Boost channel. Both channels had dual inputs.
The AC30CH had ten controls. The "Normal" channel featured a volume control while the "Top Boost" channel featured volume, treble and bass controls.
The AC30CH also included a master volume, tone cut, reverb tone, reverb level, plus tremolo speed and depth controls. These six controls affected both channels.
Tube Complement
Aside from the reverb and tremolo circuits, the AC30CH featured an all-tube audio signal path. The preamp circuit was powered by three 12AX7 preamp tubes. The output, or power amp section utilized four EL84 tubes in the classic Vox Class A (self biased) NFB (no negative feedback) design.
The reverb and and tremolo circuits were solid state.
AC30CH Cabinet
The AC30CH head cabinet was constructed from MDF (medium density fiberboard), finished in black basket weave vinyl and brown Vox grill cloth. North Coast Music offered an optional upgrade to black Vox grill.
An extension to the bottom rear of the head cabinet provided minimal clearance for the five vacuum tubes suspended from the bottom of the AC30CH chassis (see photo at left). This cabinet extension prohibits the use of a chrome swivel trolley with the AC30CH and also conflicts with a center mounted handle on a traditional AC-30 extension cabinet.
Reactive Power Attenuator
In the days before efficient PA systems, high powered 100 watt "stack" amplifiers that produced high stage sound levels were all the rage. However, in recent years performers have learned that high stage levels made it difficult to create a well balanced mix.
Most high powered guitar amps include a master volume control to dial back the output. However, amps often develop their best tone when wide open or "dimed." Incorporating an attenuator or "power soak" between the amp head and speaker cabinet allowed an amp to operate at full power while reducing the output from the speakers. The attenuator acts as a second master volume control, turning some of the power output of a fully cranked amp into heat.
Vox came up with a new twist to the power attenuator for the AC30CH head. Using their "Reactive Power Attenuator" circuit, a three position rotary switch allowed the amp to be operated at 30, 3 or 1/3 watts RMS. The Vox Reactive Power Attenuator circuit could reduce the 30 watt output of the AC30CH to bedroom levels.
Optional VFS2A Foot Switch
Vox offered an optional VFS2A foot switch for the AC30CH. This foot switch featured two indicator lamps and could remotely control the reverb and tremolo effects.
Vox V212C Extension Cabinet
Vox V212C 2x12 Enclosure - The Vox V212C was a 2x12 AC-30 sized enclosure designed to be used with either the AC15CH or AC30CH amp heads. This 16 ohm enclosure was equipped with two eight ohm 12" Celestion Greenback speakers. and was constructed from MDF plywood. It featured black basket weave vinyl, brown Vox grill cloth, two pin corners and two Vox handles.
