Vox MVX150H Head and MVX150C1 Combo Amplifiers (2017 - 2020)

Available in both combo amp and head configurations, the Vox MVX150 Series of guitar amplifiers utilized two Nutube 6P1 vacuum tubes, one in the preamp and a second in the power amp section. Aside from a digital reverb circuit, the MVX150 featured an all analog audio path. The front panels on both the MVX150H and MVX150C1 models were wrapped in Vox "black shadow" grill and featured a striking row of blue LED accent lamps for illumination through the fabric. The ECO switch on the rear panel disabled this feature, if desired. Nutube Most traditional tube guitar amplifiers include at least one 12AX7 tube, typically in the preamp. The 12AX7 is a "dual triode," meaning that it includes two separate circuits for amplification. Each of these triodes has three elements: a cathode, control grid and an anode. Amplification occurs when a flow of electrons from the cathode passes through the control grid to the anode. A filament wire located near the base of the tube heats the cathode to start this flow of electrons. Korg, the parent company of Vox, made an unusual and unexpected discovery regarding the vacuum florescent visual displays incorporated into most of their keyboards. Korg discovered that these vacuum flourescent displays could be reconfigured to act as a triode to create amplification. After extensive research, Korg developed the dual triode Nutube 6P1 "vacuum tube on a chip" (seen at right) that allowed the Nutube 6P1 to perform similar functions as a 12AX7. Nutube 6P1 "Vacuum Tube in a Chip" The Nutube 6P1 offered a number of advantages over the 12AX7. The Nutube generated the response as well as the same rich harmonics characteristic of conventional vacuum tubes such as the 12AX7 while requiring a fraction of the operating current. The Nutube was significantly smaller than a 12AX7, generated relatively little heat and offered a longer service life. However, the Nutube 6P1 could not be a direct replacement for a 12AX7 as the 12AX7 has a amplification factor of 100 while the amplification factor of the Nutube 6P1 is 14.5. Preamp and Controls

Channel One

Channel Two

The MVX150H and C1 were both single input, channel switching amps with a hybrid preamp circuit that blended solid-state circuitry with a Vox Nutube vacuum tube. Channel selection was managed by a toggle switch positioned above the input jack. This allowed users to select channels directly from the control panel or remotely using a Vox VFS2 or VFS2A footswitch. The currently selected channel was clearly identified by the illumination of its corresponding CH1 or CH2 LED indicator. Channel One Channel One was the "Clean / Crunch" or low gain channel. In addition to Gain and Volume controls, Channel One included a single Tone control that functioned like the passive Tone control on the Vox AC-30, rolling off treble response. Channel One also included two additional mini toggle switches to further refine your tone: Bright (treble boost) and Fat (bass boost). Channel Two Channel Two was the Rhythm / Lead, or high gain channel. Channel Two included Gain and Volume controls plus an active tone stack to adjust Treble, Middle, and Bass frequencies. In addition to mini toggle switches for Bright (treble boost) and Fat (bass boost), Channel Two also included a mini toggle switch to shift the center frequency (q) of the midrange control. Master Section Master Section The Master Section included five controls. • Reverb - described by Vox as a digital recreation of a spring reverb • Presence - adjusts the level of treble in the output stage • Resonance - adjusts the level of bass response (thump) in the output . stage • Master 1 - primary master volume control • Master 2 - secondary master volume control, . requires optional Vox VFS2 or VFS2A footswitch Nutube Bias Control Tube biasing is the process of setting the idle current in an amp's power tubes, a critical balance between achieving optimal tone and gain (often requiring a "hot" bias) and maximizing tube lifespan (requiring a "cool" bias). Traditionally, this adjustment requires the skill and experience of a trained technician. The MVX150 simplified this process entirely by providing individual, user-friendly Nutube Bias controls on the rear panel for both preamp channels. Turning the control counterclockwise reduced the bias, providing a more vintage, clean sounding tone. Turning the control clockwise increased the bias, improving gain and creating a more modern, saturated tone. Because the Nutube Bias controls do not affect tube longevity, users can adjust the bias freely for the sound they prefer. Optional Foot Switches The MVX150's rear panel had two jacks that allowed you to connect one or two optional Vox VFS2 or VFS2A footswitches for remote control of four amp parameters. The jack for the first foot switch controlled channel selection (when the control panel's Channel toggle is set to "FSW") and switching between the Master 1 and Master 2 volume controls. The second foot switch jack was dedicated to engaging or bypassing the effects loop and the onboard reverb. Effect Loop 1/4" effects send and return jacks are provided on the rear panel of the amp. A Series/Parallel switch for the effects loop is also included. Emulated Line Out Jack The ¼" Line Out jack included a level control and an emulated analog speaker cabinet circuit. Digital Spring Reverb and Wet Only Output Vox equipped the MVX150 with a digital reverb designed to mimic the sound of a spring reverb circuit. Additionally, the amp included a unique "Wet Only Output" jack on the rear panel which allowed just the processed signal of the reverb to be sent to a separate speaker cabinet. NuPower Hybrid Power Amp Technology Vox pioneered hybrid power amp technology in 2002 with the introduction of the "Valve Reactor" power amp stage designed for the Valvetronix series of guitar amplifiers. The Valve Reactor circuit integrated a 12AX7 tube into the output stage of a 60-watt solid-state amplifier circuit. The goal was to combine the expressive feel of a vacuum tube with the robust power and response of a solid-state power amplifier. Flash forward to 2017. Vox equipped the MVX150 with its "NuPower" power amp stage. NuPower was a successor to the Valve Reactor, pairing a NuTube vacuum tube with a 150 watt, Class D solid-state power amplifier circuit. Vox claimed that the NuPower circuit allowed the speaker's dynamic response to be fed back into the NuTube, resulting in a more authentic tube like feel. Vox also asserted that the NuPower circuit maintained the wide frequency response typical of solid-state output stages. This capability allowed the MVX150 to deliver exceptional tonal versatility, producing everything from sparkling clean tones with ringing treble to heavy, high-gain sounds with deep bass response. Impedance Selector A three position rotary impedance selector on the rear panel of the MVX150 offered the selection between 4, 8 and 16 ohm speaker loads. The amp was capable of 150 watts RMS into a 4 ohm load, 75 watts RMS into an 8 ohm load and 37.5 watts into a 16 ohm load. The rear panel of the MVX150C1 combo amp offered one speaker output jack, the MVX150H head offered two. Power Level Control The Power Level (power attenuator) control is located on the rear panel. Six settings are offered: Full power, 1/2 power, 1/5 power, 1/30 power, 1/150 power and Mute.
