The SDC-22 became the hottest selling guitar in the Vox line shortly after its introduction in 2011. Despite a street price of just $499 including gigbag, it incorporated premium hardware originally designed for the Vox Virage, 99, 77, 55 and 33 Series guitars. The SDC-22 melded modern CNC (computer numerical controlled) manufacturing capabilities with hands-on, old world craftsmanship to create an extraordinary instrument at an affordable price. Eric Kirkland, chief of design at G-ROK (Korg's Vox guitar R&D division), was the mastermind behind the "22". Body The Vox SDC-22 was built around a solid nato wood body, a sustainably sourced timber from Southeast Asia often compared to mahogany for its resonant qualities, making it ideal for guitars. Its sleek, SG-inspired, twin-cutaway shape wasn't just for looks; both the front and back were sculpted for a more comfortable playing experience. The body's dimensions were approximately 16½ inches long (421mm), 13⅜ inches (340mm) wide at the lower bout, 10⅛ inches (258mm) at the upper bout and 1¾ inches (45mm) thick. A precisely angled 3½-degree neck pocket ensured the correct set-neck location. Intriguingly, despite its dual-pickup configuration, the SDC-22 contained a concealed, unused pickup cavity under its pickguard, hinting at a potential three-pickup iteration that never saw the light of day. Unlike all the other guitars in the Virage family (including the 33, 55, 77 and 99 Series), the SDC-22 did not include the 3D contoured body feature which allowed the guitar to literally wrap around the player's midriff. Neck Equipped with a set nato neck, the Vox SDC-22 featured an unbound fretboard made of sonokeling, also known as East Indian rosewood. The fretboard had an 11.8 inch (300mm) radius. Its scale length of 25⅛ inches (638mm) was midway between the typical scale lengths of Gibson and Fender guitars. The traditional "C" shaped neck had 22 medium jumbo frets, a synthetic self-lubricating nut, two-way truss rod, acrylic dot markers, and an 11 degree headstock pitch. The neck was 1.69 inches (43mm) wide and 0.83 inches (21mm) deep at the first fret and 2 inches wide (51mm) and 0.90 inches (23mm) deep at the twelfth. The neck joined the body at the 19th fret, and its inverse heel design provided excellent access to the upper frets.

Vox Super Smooth Custom Tuners The tuning stability of the SDC-22 was enhanced by its Vox "Super Smooth Custom Tuners" (see photo at right), originally designed by G-ROK for the Vox Virage guitar. Each tuner set was composed of six individual, sealed units with chrome-plated cases. Their satin finished, wave motif pegs matched the satin finish of the MaxConnect™ bridge. Vox Design XLM™ Compact Humbucker Pickups In contrast to the Vox Virage II and Series 33 through 99 guitars which featured Vox CoAxe™ pickups, the SDC-22 was equipped with a pair of Vox Design XLM™ compact humbucker pickups (see photo at right). With a DC resistance of nearly 10k ohms, the XLM™ was a high output pickup that offered a brighter, more single-coil like tone while reducing hum and interference. In addition to volume and tone controls plus a three-way (bridge-both neck) pickup selector, the SDC-22 included a two-position "Master Mode Select" switch that toggled between "Clean" and "Lead" tones. MaxConnect™ Aluminum Bridge The MaxConnect™ bridge (see photo at right) was originally designed by G-ROK for the Vox Virage guitar. The bridge was a precision cast, satin finish aluminum assembly weighing a scant two ounces. Vox claimed it had the longest range of saddle adjustment of any bridge on the market, allowing correct intonation from the lightest to the heaviest of string sets. It also offered easy, "straight-in" access for restringing the guitar. Two brass studs, anchored to the guitar's body, secured the bridge to the body and allowed precise string height adjustments. Country of Origin The Vox SDC-22 was designed in America by G-ROK of Novato CA and built for Vox by Rira, Surabaya, Indonesia.
