History of the Starstream Name - Vox introduced the teardrop shaped Starstream 6 and Starstream 12 guitars in 1968. These sixties era instruments featured battery operated onboard effects including fuzz tone, repeater, wah-wah and treble/bass booster. Vox resurrected the Starstream name nearly fifty years later with the 2016 introduction of the six string Starstream Type 1 modeling guitar. The Starstream Type 1 not only featured battery operated effects, it also offered circuitry that allowed tone modeling of various stringed instruments. The guitar was constucted on a compact wood body similar in size to a travel guitar. The body was then mounted inside of a sculpted plastic outer frame that had the stylized outline of a traditional dual cutaway electric guitar. While this unusual "frame" body design has proven to be somewhat controversial, it gives the Starstream Type 1 a striking and unique appearance and allows the guitars to be unusually lightweight.

Vox Starstream Artist Series Basses - Vox entered the premium bass guitar market in 2019 with the introduction of the Starstream Artist Series four string basses. These basses had an alder inner body with a sculpted plastic outer frame shaped like a dual cutaway guitar, similar to the Starstream Type 1. Two models were produced: the VSBA-A1H with a single humbucking pickup and the VSBA-A2S with two single-coil pickups.

Vox needed to select a distinguished supplier of premium bass pickups and active electronics for installation in the Vox Artist Series basses. The natural choice was Aguilar Amplification. Aguilar had the knowledge and experience to design and build an electronic package for these Vox basses that would satisfy the needs of the world's most demanding musicians.

The VSBA-A1H bass was equipped with one Aguilar AG-4M humbucking pickup. Aguilar described this as a "Music Man" style pickup. A push/pull switch on the volume control selected either a series or parallel pickup coil configuration. The bass also included individual bass and treble controls.

The VSBA-A2S bass was equipped with two Aguilar AG-4J-70 single coil pickups. Aguilar described these as "1970's J style" pickups, bright while maintaining a punchy low-end. Each pickup had its own volume control. The bass and treble controls were stacked, having a two-ring knob with a center detent. The upper ring was for boosting/cutting the treble while the lower ring adjusted the bass.

Both basses were equipped with the Aguilar OBP-2 twin-band active preamp powered by two nine volt batteries. It offered 18db boost/cut at 40 Hz and 16db boost/cut at 6.5 kHz. A body mounted toggle switch selected between active and passive modes. The treble and bass controls were bypassed when operating in passive mode.

Vox chose the Japanese firm Gotoh to supply a premium die cast bridge with brass saddles (p/n 201-B4 CR) and Gotoh branded tuning machine heads (p/n GB707 C L4) for the Artist Series basses.

Both Artist Series basses had a bolt on 21 fret short scale neck. The neck was very slender, measuring ~1½" (38mm) wide at the nut. The A1H model had an ebony fretboard with dot inlays, the A2S fretboard was maple with block inlays. The basses were factory equipped with .045 to .105 round wound strings.

Color options: MBMB (metal black body and frame), WHPW (pearl white body, white frame), RDMR (metallic red body, red frame)
