Vox Stereo Fuzz-Wah, Model 9-3700 - Early 1970s Model

As the name implied, the Vox Stereo Fuzz-Wah (Model 9-3700) integrated the two most iconic guitar effects of the sixties into a single pedal. It combined the aggressive, saturated clipping of a fuzz circuit with the sweepable filter of a wah-wah. The fuzz was enabled by a stomp switch located over the top of the rocker pedal.
Circuit Design
The Vox Stereo Fuzz-Wah utilized a single printed circuit board to house its circuitry. Deviating from the design of the legendary Vox Tone Bender fuzz tone, the fuzz circuit of the Stereo Fuzz-Wah utilized silicon rather than germanium transistors. The output of the fuzz circuit was positioned at the start of the signal chain. This arrangement allowed the player to use the fuzz as a standalone effect or as a high-gain foundation for the wah to manipulate.
In total, the Stereo Fuzz Wah included a total of five silicon transistors. It appears that three transistors were dedicated to the fuzz circuit and two powered the wah effect. The wah portion of the circuit was most commonly equipped with a TDK 5103 "brown box" inductor.
The Vox Stereo Fuzz-Wah also included two internal, PC-mounted potentiometers for factory-preset control over fuzz intensity and fuzz volume. To assist with fine-tuning, a diagram was included on the bottom plate of the unit to help users locate and adjust these hidden controls.
Modes
The Vox Stereo Fuzz-Wah offered three pedal modes determined by how cables are connected to its dual output jacks:.
- Mono Mode: Insert a cable between the output jack nearer the front of the pedal and your amplifier. This directs fuzz, wah and clean signals through one cable.
- Mono with Volume Mode: Insert a cable between the output jack nearer the rear of the the pedal and your amplifier. Like Mono Mode, this directs fuzz, wah and clean signals through one cable but adds a volume swell function for the clean signal.
- Stereo Mode: Insert two cables from the output jacks of the Stereo Fuzz-Wah to the inputs of two amplifiers to split the output of the pedal into a stereo effect.
Country of Origin
Joe Benaron, president of Thomas Organ, persistently advocated for shifting Vox production from California to Italy in the sixties to capitalize on the region's lower labor costs. Benaron even proposed that JMI shutter its UK manufacturing sites to co-manage a shared Italian facility with Thomas. Although a large-scale joint plant never came to fruition, a smaller factory called JEN was established in Italy to manufacture Vox effect pedals. The name "JEN" was an acronym derived from the first names of its founders: "J" for Joe Benaron and "EN" for his Italian partner, Ennio Unchini.
This begs the question: Was the 9-3700 Vox Fuzz-Wah produced by JEN in Italy or by Thomas Organ in California?
Although JEN produced effects for the global market, Thomas Organ's control over Vox was limited strictly to North America. To avoid marketing conflicts with international distributors, JEN limited the branding of their pedals to "Vox," omitting any mention of Thomas Organ. However, the base plate of the 9-3700 Vox Fuzz-Wah explicitly identifies "Thomas Organ, Sepulveda California" as the manufacturer, providing strong evidence that this specific model was produced in California, not Italy.
Dates of Production
Because the Vox 9-3700 Fuzz-Wah is absent from every Thomas Organ/Vox catalog and price list published between September 21, 1965 and February 2, 1970, it is reasonable to conclude that the pedal was introduced no earlier than the spring of 1970. It is my opinion that the Vox Fuzz-Wah was offered from mid-1970 through 1973.
