About a year after the introduction of the premium Starstream Artist Series basses, Vox added the VSB-H1 and VSB-S2 Starstream Series basses to their 2020 product catalog. These new Vox "VSB" instruments were essentially pared down versions of the original Starstream Artist bass offered at a reduced price point. Here is how the cost saving was accomplished.
While the bodies of the Starstream Artist Series basses were made from alder, the VSB Starstream bodies were made from poplar. Poplar was likely chosen because it was less expensive.
The Starstream Artist Series bodies featured one of three premium paint finishes: Metal Black, Metallic Red or Pearl White. The VSB Starstream basses were offered in plain black, red or white finishes.
Premium quality Aguilar pickups were standard equipment in the Vox Starstream Artist Series basses. The VSB Starstream basses were equipped with unbranded pickups. The VSB-H1 had one "musicman" style humbucker with series/parallel coil switching and a volume control. The VSB-S2 had two single coil "J" style pickups with dual volume controls.
The Vox Starstream Artist Series basses were equipped with a battery operated Aguilar preamp with a two band active EQ. The VSB Starstream basses had passive tone circuitry.
Gotoh supplied Vox a premium die cast bridge with brass saddles (p/n 201-B4 CR) and Gotoh branded sealed tuning machine heads (p/n GB707 C L4) for the Starstream Artist Series basses. The VSB Starstream basses used an unbranded, stamped steel bridge and unbranded tuners.
All of the Starstream basses had a removable 21 fret short scale neck. The neck measured only ~1½" (38mm) wide at the nut. The Artist Series basses were equipped with either ebony or maple fretboards, depending on the model. The fretboard on the VSB Starstream Series basses was purpleheart. All Starstream basses came equipped with .045 to .105 round wound strings.
